"Arkansas Produce Without Arkansas Soil" - Good Roots

21 Feb 2023 in

Hydroponics, the agriculture practice of growing plants in nutrient-controlled water without soil, has gained popularity in recent years. Hydroponic systems can be set up in a variety of settings, allowing Arkansans the ability to be farmers without the costly land. In 2023, at-home hydroponics has become even more accessible and convenient thanks to The Nurserie in Little Rock.

“It uses 90 to 95% less water,” he said. “If you don’t have big money and big opportunities and you can’t go get big land, do you have a spare bedroom [you can use]? It’s like a greenhouse, but [you’re] doing it on a modular, mobile, at-home scale – a little countertop method, a 2-foot by 6-foot rack with four shelves. You can get 46 plants harvested on one shelf.”

One of the main benefits of at-home hydroponics is that it allows individuals to grow fresh, healthy produce year-round, regardless of season or weather. With the right equipment, set-up and training, home hydroponics farmers can grow a variety of crops - leafy greens and herbs to fruits and vegetables. Additionally, because hydroponic systems use less water than traditional soil-based farming, it is a more sustainable and eco-friendly method of growing food.

There are a variety of hydroponic systems available for at-home use, ranging from DIY small-scale setups to more advanced, automated systems. Many of these systems can be purchased as kits, making it easy for beginners to get started with hydroponics.

One of the challenges of at-home hydroponics is ensuring that plants receive the proper nutrients and lighting. There are numerous resources available to help home growers with this process. Online communities offer a wealth of information and advice, while specialized hydroponic stores like The Nurserie can provide guidance and equipment.

In addition to providing fresh produce, at-home hydroponics can also be a fun and rewarding hobby. Watching plants grow and thrive in a hydroponic system can be satisfying and enjoyable, and the process can even be educational for children.

Overall, at-home hydroponics in 2023 is a viable and accessible option for anyone interested in growing their own fresh produce. With the right equipment and resources, Arkansan home growers can enjoy a variety of benefits, sustainability to year-round access to healthy fruits and vegetables.
