Modern Indigenous Culture

“Art of Home: A Wind River Story” – Two indigenous artists create new works reflecting on their tribal homelands, the Wind River Indian Reservation. Ken Williams (Arapaho) is a Santa Fe art celebrity, and Sarah Ortegon (Shoshone) is an up-and-coming actress in Denver. Both artists travel to Wind River Reservation to reconnect with their ancestors and present their artwork to a somewhat isolated community.

“Next at the Kennedy Center | Embracing Duality: Modern Indigenous Culture” – In partnership with electronic music pioneers The Halluci Nation, R&B artist Martha Redbone and performance artist Ty Defoe, the Kennedy Center explores the impact and evolution of indigenous performing arts cultures.

Natural Indigenous Symbols

“The American Buffalo” – The dramatic story of America’s national mammal, which sustained the lives of Native people for untold generations, being driven to the brink of extinction, before an unlikely collection of people rescues it from disappearing forever. Ken Burns recounts the tragic collision of two opposing views of the natural world – and the unforgettable characters who pointed the nation in a different direction.

“The American Buffalo: A Story of Resilience” – Judy Woodruff moderates a one-hour conversation with filmmaker Ken Burns and three experts: Jason Blades, Rosalyn LaPier and Dan Flores. The discussion explores lessons from the film – the early history and special relationship between Native American people and the buffalo; its relation to the larger grassland and prairie ecosystems; and Tribal contributions to the restoration of the buffalo today.

“America Outdoors With Baratunde Thurston | Death Valley: Life Blooms” – It’s the hottest place on Earth, but Death Valley is remarkably full of life. Baratunde Thurston seeks out the extremes of this national park and finds an outdoor mecca for those who embrace its heat, isolation and natural beauty. Meet an ultra-marathoner who runs in the brutal heat of summer and an elder of the Timbisha Shoshone tribe, who helps us see that this is a place where life blooms.

“Iconic America: The American Bald Eagle” – The story of how the American Bald Eagle soared to its vaunted perch in American iconography, a symbol not only of patriotism, but also of environmental activism and Native American traditions.

“Kingdom of the Sky: Rockies” – The Rockies stretch 3,000 miles up the length of North America, and are one of the great mountain ranges of the world. These mountains are home not just to cougars, wolverines, wolves and grizzly bears, but also daredevil wingsuit flyers, who jump from high peaks, and Native Americans, competing in breakneck horse races.
