Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive

24 Oct 2023 in

Won’t you help a neighbor? Join us in the annual Mister Rogers Sweater Drive to support Arkansans in need! From Nov. 5 to Nov. 20, you’ll have the chance to donate new or gently used sweaters at libraries that are partnering with Arkansas PBS.

“Real strength has to do with helping others.”

Fred Rogers was famous for his closetful of sweaters, which were featured in every episode of his show. These memorable sweaters grew out of a tradition of hand-knit gifts that Rogers’ mother Nancy made every year. Nancy would knit 12 sweaters every year as gifts for friends and family. While not everyone has such fine-tuned knitting skills, everyone can participate in acts of kindness towards others.

“Anyone who does anything to help a child in his life is a hero.”

“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” emphasized the social and emotional needs of children and encouraged young people to be neighborly to those around them and, through it, Fred Rogers taught people about kindness and about being part of a community that cares. You, too, can be part of a caring community this fall by taking part in the sweater drive and helping to provide for neighbors in need.

“It’s not so much what we have in this life that matters. It’s what we do with what we have.”

Although the show may have ended, its message still rings true. Kindness remains a timeless necessity; it's always good to help a neighbor. Help keep your neighbors and others across the state stay warm this fall and winter by sharing what you’re not wearing.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

Fred Rogers began the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive in 1997 as a way to encourage the neighborly spirit, and we're proud to continue his legacy of being a caring neighbor. Every sweater collected in the 2023 Mister Rogers' Neighborhood Sweater Drive will be donated directly to individuals in need through local Arkansas charities.
